The Hill Center Concert Series

Ensembles in residence at the Hill Center provide top tier music performance coupled with children's programming. The aim of the series is to bring the city's rich musical environment to the Hill community.

Composer and guitar virtuoso Aaron Flinn will descend from the Green Mountain State to share his view on life in verse. A Vermont legend, Aaron includes elements of folk, indie rock and classic country, delivered with powerful vocals, poetry, and finger-picking guitar. This concert will include an eclectic group of Americana and rock songs, with an emphasis on lyrical substance and performance from the soul. Aaron has carried his message from New York City to Red Rocks, next stop Washington, DC.

Bassist Eric Wheeler is a D.C. native, and leads the newly formed Hill Center Jazz Ensemble. Since getting his masters in jazz performance from Howard University, Eric has been a rising star in the D.C. and New York City jazz scenes. Eric recently appeared with Pharoah Sanders, Cyrus Chestnut, Roy Hargrove, and Tim Warfield, in addition to performing on numerous recordings.

Singer/Songwriter Mary Ann Redmond is known for her powerful performances and is one of the most popular entertainers in the Washington, DC area. With co-writer Todd Wright, their song "Love Me Anyway" was recorded this year by Celine Dion and Jonny Hallyday. Mary Ann is the recipient of no less than 22 Washington Area Music Awards, Wammies, in various categories.

The Washington, DC based jazz vocalist and cabaret artist Debra Tidwell has performed on both national and international stages, including the Kennedy Center, the San Remo Jazz Festival, and the Congressial Black Caucus Awards, and Blues Alley. For her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, Ms. Tidwell received a Helen Hayes Award Nomination for Best Actress in a Musical and was awarded the Mayor's Arts Award as Outstanding Emerging Artist.

Harpist Brandee Younger pursues a multi-faceted career in classical, jazz, and world music fields. She has worked & recorded with a number of jazz luminaries including Jack DeJohnette, Ravi Coltrane, Wycliffe Gordon, Charlie Haden, Reggie Workman, Kenny Garrett, and performed with symphonies and chamber ensembles including the New York Camerata, Ensemble du Monde, and Impulse Artist Series. She received worldwide attention with her inclusion in the Mercedes Benz Mix Tape.

Guitarist Richard Miller brings his ensemble to the Hill Center for an evening of Brazilian music. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Richard is now on the faculty of Columbia University, while maintaining a busy performance schedule in New York and Washington, DC. Recent performances have included Merkin Hall in NYC, the Kennedy Center, and a State Department concert. Composer and Pipa Virtuoso Min Xiao Fen has established herself as a ranking exponent of traditional Chinese music as it meets and mingles with music of the western world. A longtime presence in New York City, she has collaborated with countless ranking ensembles and orchestras, including the Brooklyn Philharmonic and the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, and has premiered works of Phillip Glass and Tan Dun. She has appeared at many jazz festivals and recorded and performed with rock vocalist Björk. She has collaborated with director Peter Sellars, Randy Weston, Regina Carter, D.J. Spooky, and visual artist Christian Marclay. Min began her career as a first class artist in China, principal of the prestigious Nanjing Traditional Music Orchestra.
